Planter drainage layer in a garden.
A bed that holds water rots its own roots. The drainage layer goes in below the growing medium, against the wall or the kerb, and carries surplus to an outlet before it can sit against the structure.
The board is stiff enough to hold its shape under the weight of wet soil, and the filter fabric keeps the fines out of the voids so the layer still works in the fifth winter, not just the first.
Complete, not nearly.

Run length, what crosses it, where the water goes — that is enough to quote a run.
