SUMP — where solids and grit are allowed to settle
Drive-over grating is a load question, not a design question. If a pallet truck crosses it, the answer is on the load sheet, not in the drawing.
SUMP — fixed parameters
Section
A box that holds what arrives before it reaches the outlet: a high basket for the solids, a sump below the invert for the grit that gets through. Sized by the volume between cleans, not by the pipe.
How this series fails
- A sump sized to the pipe: it fills in a week and then behaves like a blocked drain.
- A grate rated for feet and used by a pallet truck — the frame bends, the body does not.
- An inlet placed where the hose cannot reach the sump floor.
What decides the size
- Volume of solids and grit between cleans — this sets the box, not the flow
- What crosses the grate, and with what wheels
- Whether the inlet is side or top, which is a plan question
- Whether the outlet can be rodded from the sump or needs a separate access
Structure only — not published
- Dimensions: length, width, depth, outlet position and build-up height — issued on the dimension sheet per project
- Load class for each grate variant, once tested
- Assembly photographs, once the shoot is done
- A worked example with a run length, a fall and an outlet, as a downloadable section
